Custom Labels for Small Businesses: What to Decide Before Ordering

A first custom label order becomes much easier when material, size, quantity and artwork are decided in the right sequence. Use this practical checklist for small businesses.

Custom Labels for Small Businesses: What to Decide Before Ordering

Small businesses often start a label project by asking for a price before the specification is fully defined. That can make comparison difficult because material, size, shape, finish and quantity all influence the order.

A better process is to make decisions in sequence. The goal is not to know every print term; it is to know enough about the package to create a clear specification.

Start with the package, not the label

Choose the bottle, jar, pouch or box before finalizing label size. Measure the actual production package and identify the flat or usable area where the label will sit.

If the container may change, delay exact sizing until the final package is confirmed. Small dimensional differences can affect wraparound labels more than expected.

Choose material around use and brand

Use the Material Guide to compare white, clear, paper, silver, gold and holographic options. Think about moisture, container visibility and the visual tone of the brand.

Do not choose specialty material just because it looks premium in isolation. It should support the product and artwork.

Define quantity using a realistic sales horizon

Ordering too few can increase repeat ordering effort, while ordering too many can lock you into artwork or regulatory information that may change. Estimate how many units you expect to package before the design is likely to be revised.

If several designs share the same size and material, plan the total quantity and variation mix together.

Prepare the artwork only after the specification is stable

Bleed, shape and safe area depend on the final dimensions. Use the Artwork Guide before export and check text at actual size.

Once the specification is clear, Get an Instant Price. If the project has unusual requirements, use Request a Quote.
