Custom Labels for Startups: A Practical First-Order Checklist

Startups can avoid expensive packaging revisions by confirming the container, size, material, artwork and quantity in the right order. Use this first-order checklist.

Custom Labels for Startups: A Practical First-Order Checklist

A startup's first label order often happens while the product itself is still changing. That makes it easy to print too early, over-order or lock a design to packaging that is not final.

The safest approach is to treat the first order as a sequence of decisions. Confirm the physical package first, then material, dimensions, artwork and quantity.

Freeze the production container before final sizing

Do not build final label dimensions around a sample bottle or box if the production packaging may change. Even a small difference in diameter or panel size can affect how a finished label sits.

Measure the actual container and create a paper mockup before approving artwork.

Choose material around the real use case

Think about moisture, refrigeration, handling and how much of the container should remain visible. Use the Material Guide to compare white, clear, paper and specialty materials.

Avoid choosing a material only because a competitor uses it. The package should support your own product and brand.

Keep the first quantity flexible

Early-stage brands often revise copy, ingredients, claims, barcodes or packaging. Ordering far beyond the near-term production plan can create obsolete inventory.

Use our quantity planning guide to balance unit price with the likelihood of future changes.

Proof the first order more carefully than the tenth

Scan codes, check spelling, print the label at actual size and place it on the final package. The first approved label becomes the reference for everything that follows.

When the specification is stable, use Get an Instant Price. For an unusual launch package, use Request a Quote.
